My first cri show in Seoul….
This is not my first trip to Seoul (am blessed that my job allows me to travel there twice a year), but this is definitely an especially special and memorable one for me. The days leading up to the day departing from Singapore were filled with much excitement and anticipation. I did not do much planning for the trip itself, the only plan I made was to “do everything related to JKS” – yes, as simple as that.
On the first day arriving in Seoul, we met up with some eels via an impromptu lunch arrangement. There were eels from Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. It was raining cats and dogs as we were trying to search for the meeting venue – the gate of Hongdae. I was totally drenched when we finally found the Korean eel whom we have never met before standing at the gate waiting for us in the rain. When we reached the café, all my complaints were gone immediately– it was one of the shooting sites for Love Rain, and there were pictures of JKS displayed, as well as a poster with his autograph! We ate the food JKS had in the café during the shooting. Needless to say, we eels connected immediately – even though this was the first time we met and got to know each other – and we were chattering away, talking everything about JKS.
Notes from Aphrael:
The account below is from this guy who has stayed in Korea for 3 years as per his account. It is his personal account which I have translated, and we bear no liability for whether his account contains facts or not; it is up to the reader to judge.
Just to add, I believe this author’s account because (i) he is not a fan of JKS and (ii) several incidents that the author describes, I have read it from other people’s accounts and all the facts match.
This translation is dedicated to everyone who wants to know the history behind the Korean backlash on JKS a few years back.

I stayed in Korea for 3 years from 2006 to 2009, the goddess I admired fell in love with him in 2006, hence I hated him since 2006 because he occupied the heart of my goddess!! *cry*….
But because of this, I started to pay attention to him. At that time I was in Korea, and he was criticized by all the Koreans, so later when I saw his tremendous success, I was very surprised. Although I don’t like him, although I hate him, I still have to admit that he is a tall, rich and handsome star worthy of admiration and to learn from.
His character is representative of most men of his generation or the character that most men admire (despite that many men don’t like him). Here I have to clarify, every man (tall, rich, handsome or not) has his self-esteem and dignity, and his dream. Don’t deny it, so long as you are a man, you are like every man who has their dream of being a hero. We can endure poverty, laugh at ourselves for being short, ugly and poor, see our goddesses being snatched away, we can do without our shame, but we all have our dignity and dream – we value it even more, because this is all that we have (a little literary, but the truth in our heart). But he – his dignity and dream were trampled on and laughed at by all Koreans.
Next I’m going to describe his experiences, this experience is what every man should respect. Because I have lived in Korea for 3 years, what I describe next is what I have seen personally.
This is an official statement from Eels Club International and Jang Keun Suk Forever blog to announce our withdrawal from Seoul (International) Drama Awards (SDA) with immediate effect and henceforth our boycott of SDA.
It has taken JKS eels worldwide a few days to reach this general consensus, and below are the factors that contributed to our decision.
(1) unreliable online voting mechanism with many technical errors that barred some of our votes
(2) lack of transparency in the vote count
(3) lack of trust in the integrity of the voting system
(4) finally, we wish to comment that the Best Actor Award is only meaningfully awarded based on the judgment by an independent panel of qualified industry professionals, and not based on fans’ voting. That would be the Most Popular Actor award. This is a distinction that awards organisers should be aware of.

Actor Jang Keun Suk made an appearance in Paris, shouting “New York Herald Tribune” with wine in one hand and newspapers in the other hand.
On the morning of 14 July, JKS updated his twitter, “Not that I want to fight the whole world. I only want to excel against myself … New York Herald Tribune…! I struggled free of 4 years of fetter. Get crazy” and uploaded his photo.
In the photo, JKS held a red wine bottle in one hand and the New York Herald Tribune in the other while walking along Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The posture of JKS closing his eyes and enjoying the red wine shows the usual wacky style of JKS, and Arc de triomphe de l’Étoile is in the picture background.
In 2008, JKS wrote on his CyWorld blog that if he has a chance to go to Paris, he will definitely hold a bottle of red wine in one hand and newspapers in the other while walking along Avenue des Champs-Élysées and shouting “New York Herald Tribune”.
At that time, because of this blog post, JKS was nicknamed “Boastful Keun Suk”, and in 2011 when JKS participated in MBC’s “Kneedrop Guru” programme, JKS said, “In the movie À bout de souffle, there is one scene where the female lead walked along Avenue des Champs-Élysées selling newspapers. I wrote that after seeing the movie.”
Netizens commented that JKS “really did what he said”, “JKS is very cool” and “because it’s JKS, he’ll do what he says”.
