[OSEN=Kwon Ji Young] An actor Jang Keun Suk created the best scene with a ‘3 minute crying out’ that contains the delicate acting of inner psychology.

In the 14th episode of KBS 2TV ‘The Pretty Man’ that airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which aired on January 2nd, Dokgo Ma Te (Jang Keun Suk) was shown collapsing from shock as he found out that he is a real son who of Na Hong Ran (Kim Bo Yeon) in which Na Hong Ran has abandoned, not the son of a concubine of MG Group.

With a tired look in his face, Jang Keun Suk went to the place where the bones of his mother Kim Mi Sook (Yang Mi Kyung), a mother who raised him, is buried and said “Am I not your son? Then, who am I? Who are you?” and shouted out in sorrow. In addition, he said “What kind of shitty situation is this!!” and he shed tears while showing a self-ridicule smile to Kim Bo Tong (IU), even making people who are watching the drama almost want to cry.

Especially, Jang Keun Suk portrayed the inner psychology of Dokgo Ma Te in an elaborate manner and left a strong impression. Him shedding tears not knowing what to do with his overflowing emotions was so pitiful that it made people think almost want to hug him so it is close to being picked as the best scene of this day.

Not only that, Jang Keun Suk’s detailed portrayal of emotions that contained the sorrow that Dokgo Ma Te felt even with only one sentence literally made the viewers so into him and raised the level of absorption.

When shooting this scene, it was said that Jang Keun Suk showed his skills of showing tears after he immediately concentrated on the scene and have took control of the shooting site. To such masterpiece acting, it was heard that the staff members around him were left speechless for a long time.

Meanwhile, in the end of the drama this day, Ma Te realized his love toward Bo Tong and it ends at the part where he runs to her and hugs her tight, giving rise to viewers’ excitement. The 15th episode of ‘The Pretty Man’ will be on air at 10pm on January 8th.

Quoting the article: “even making people who are watching the drama almost want to cry.”

Well… I watched this episode twice and I CRIED twice, too at this very scene… My poor MaTe… T_T
Such an emotional moment for MaTe… I’m happy, though, that in the end of the episode he seemed to be gathering his ‘strength’ again, thanks to our Botongie :).

  5. I wonder why he wasn’t awarded the Excellence In Acting in the recently concluded KBS Drama Awards.. He is deserving to bag that award. What the heck with the rating, can’t they just recognize his ACTING SKILLS? Nevertheless, this proves the professionalism of JKS. I think he doesn’t need an award to prove that he is a great and skilled actor. Congratulations JKS you nailed this scene.. Superb acting indeed..

    • i agree. he is an excellent actor and he is not recognised in korea. there are many actors and actresses right now whose acting really sucks.

    • I totally agree! It’s just business for them, giving awards to high-rated shows where the basis should be performance and quality. If they are happy with the ratings then give out bonuses, but they should keep the integrity of awards by giving it to the real “best” actor, “best” actress, “best” drama.
This is the same comment i posted in one of the hancinema articles about the year-end awards..

    • Makes you question what these awards are still worth??
      makes you going hmmmm….
If it’s not given because of superb acting but merely given because of high ratings…then should they not have one for highest grossing drama…

Some of the actors who gets these awards really sucks…so I don’t watch these awards shows anymore…makes me cringe..

JKS does not need an award, as he said..when he was young he thought that is what a actor wants…but earning awards makes you lazy and you you stop growing..
Very true for a lot of actors…the best actors sometimes don’t ever get any award or they get one further down the line..but their names and works still lingers on decade after decade

One thing is for sure…KBS is doing a worthless job with Beautiful Man / Pretty Boy / Pretty Man / Bel Ami…etc…

The biggest professionals are JKS and the rest of the cast and crew..

Hence the problem with awards. Most people are scared and are tempted to reject people or facts out of the ordinary.
Jang Keun Suk is not an ordinary artist. He is a free spirit, not chained in patterns. He knows that for true performance, freedom is as necessary as talent and intelligence. He is unique in strength and talent. He always took risks and always looked forward with confidence, being in a constant search.
Awards received by him are millions of hearts beating for him the support of fans, their thoughts are turning to him with confidence. He will always be victorious because he knows how to overcome difficulties and is able be lifted up even when he is falling.

  6. When I watched this scene without English sub and with Sub, I was not almost cried…..I was crying river every time I watched it…..and same go with hug….I wanted to hug him tight, wanted to chase away his pain.

When I watched those fat real tears falling down his face soooo naturally, my tears automatic falling, too. That is how powerful JKS’s crying acting skill to me.!!

Jang Keun Suk is at his BEST when he acts in crying scenes.!! I am not saying this becoz I am his fan. If you ever watched Hwang Ji drama and Hong GIL Dong….you would know exactly what I mean. Jang Keun Suk can really really make crying scenes naturally!! I was (still am ) amazed how good ACTOR Jang is….when I watched one of Hong Gil Dong’s BTS video…when Jang Keuk Suk was in his character, he would cried, cried like river….but when the director called “CUT”…he would switch back to REAL person in a blind of an eyes….to be jolly and goofey Sukkie again. His acting skils totally amazed me then…and still amazed me now.

My dear STAR JKS, you will always get my utmost respect and admiration from me regarding your acting abilities. One of the many reasons why I love you so much….all starting from your acting power. Whenever you are in doubt of your own ability? An if you ever think your acting is not good enough becoz stupid Antis people said so…… please please always remember that you are born to be one of great K-actors, truly..!!! Without Doubt!!

I do not cry easily but he made me…so said…and acted soooooooooooo good…
His real tears…the little twist in his voice…wow…

      I love the skatingscene…it was soooooo tender…like a bright new day…the spring started…so subtile…so beautiful

  8. Jang Keun Suk truly showed that he is a sincere and talented actor. He moved viewers and made them feel what Ma Te was feeling even without words. His acting, the expression on his face relayed all of that inner emotions and conflict. Episode 14 was a roller coaster of emotions, it made the viewers cry, get excited, and moved us at the edge of our seats..
    정말 잘 했어요, 장근석씨!! 축하해요!

  9. I don’t agree on this article for one ” even making people who are watching the drama almost want to cry”. I was crying a river over it. Actually I started to cry when NHR said those most heartless words when she met Mate. Then after that, everytime I see Mate’s face, I cry. Gosh, the look he has showed all the sadness, disbelieve, anger and mostly depress. When a person hear that another person don’t want him to appear in the world. and this person is your mom, yes, why you gave birth to someone then abandoned and not only that, years after you meet him, why you want him to disappear again. Cruelest thing ever in the world. I can say no more for it. Just tears keep dropping on my face. But when I see Mate’s note to NHR, I can see how strong he is now and how mature and keep his own dignity in front of a person who he carries her blood but doesn’t want to have any connection with her. Mate is a survivor and he will be success.

    • Beautiful Man is really one of the most wonderful drama’s I have seen in a long long time…
The acting is superb..not overacted like most korean drama’s..but the story is really good and the manhwa and scriptwriters did a really really good job..

KBS did a really bad job…the promotion of BM really sucks..
      I don’t understand because it’s their drama what’s with them…

  10. I confess I didn’t cry, even while tears rolled down Jang Keun Suk’s cheeks. Although his ability as an actor to make me cry is one of the things that made me an Eel. I’ve cried “with him” many times before, and I’ll probably do so again.
For me the beauty of this episode was in his ability to show the “shock” and the “break down” of his spirit. A demoralized Dokgo Mate who has quite literally had his world turned up side down. Yes, my heart wanted to reach out to him… and my arms ached to embrace him, because I’ve honestly never identified with one of JKS’s characters more.
When I was 12, I found out my “birth secret” and I cried for the next 2 hours. I knew I’d been adopted, but I found out that I was an illegitimate child of one of my older “siblings” and had been adopted by my own family. But, because her 2nd husband didn’t know, I was not allowed to discuss it openly within the family. (Still can’t.)
So when Dokgo Mate’s birth mother asked him to “go away”… I totally understood how he felt. I watched as the tears gave way to a play of emotions across JKS’s handsome face. The shock, the sense of abandonment and betrayal, oh I know them well.
And as the article above brought out his acting in this episode was a masterful display of delicate inner psychology… a rare glimpse inside Dokgo Mate’s soul.
I know there are plenty of non-Eels watching Beautiful Man, and some of them have “2nd Lead Syndrome”, wanting BoTong to end up with David Choi. They just don’t like Dokgo Mate or the whole “birth secret” angle to the story. They wanted it to be a lighthearted fun RomCom, and were chafing at the slow pace of the story. They don’t get it. *shrug*
Beautiful Man is so much more than a Manga… just as Jang Keun Suk, is more than just a “pretty face!”

    • Sis Nan, thanks for sharing your personal experience. Big big hugs to you :). One thing that I love so much from this drama is that it is so real. Although it is an adaptation of a manhwa, the issues are real & we can somehow easily relate ourselves to the characters. I am so proud of Jang Keun Suk that he has been successfully showed us this MaTe, a character I used to dislike and now totally am in love with. This drama is really not just another light rom-com… It’s a very smartly scripted drama… To me it’s like a slice of Japanese Green Tea Cheesecake, one of my most favourite dessert. I prefer to enjoy each bite, slowly, bits by bits. How MaTe finally realised what Botong means to him… It’s just the perfect timing! And who said JKS and IU lacked chemkstry? They lacked skinship, yes probably, but the chemistry is there :). It’s a pity that most viewers want the ‘explicit’ and ‘fast paced’ romance… But there are still people like us, who could get the meaning of the story 🙂

      • sis, many people did not see the MaTongie’s chemistry, because they want the Visual of hugging and kissing scenes a lot. Which I understand because WE are living in the virtual visual world like NOW.

Modern LOVE…..people must see to feel; not feel even without seeing or saying the “love” word.

To me, some actions of love, even giving in limited, speak volume.!! More than saying “I LOVE YOU” all the time….but feeling nothing in the heart…

You are just short sum up what’s LOVE in nowadays represent to majority of people (or viewers)…. Bommm…Bammm…Thank you Mammm…..fast pace love style….hahaha.

I see those fast LOVE is one of the problems with young people nowadays. Aishhh…what can I say…..that is the way of our society and trending of young love like NOW….existing almost every where in the world.

Majority of us, eels here, who are watching this drama, already knew and concluded that people must watch this drama with open-minds and hearts…and MUST use their brains to see and understand the drama!! Kkkk

    • Hug Nan…
I understand you…you did not cry but you felt all Mate´s pain..
This drama is soooooooo deep…really beautifully done.

The drama has so much reality to it..it despict what happens in real life…with a bit tear and a smile.. except for the adoption and BT, it´s almost like JKS´s life

    • Nan I want to hug you! I can really feel what you feel, because in our family he also have an adopted child. We only inform her after she graduated in the university because my cousin who adopted her was so scared that it might destroyed her self-esteem while growing up, especially if she will know that her biological mother choose to give it up so that she will not be abandoned by her family. I was deeply touched and hurt by that feeling of Mate after he had known all the lies of his life. I know how it feels… because it took us almost a month to find my niece after she knew the truth.

  11. It was a masterpiece indeed! No one could’ve done that scene as good as JKS… Actually, no one else would suite the role of MaTe Better than him! Great choice! He deserves, at least, an Excellence Award for the PM! Well, next year! 🙂

    Cheers!

  12. You can’t help but feel for someone who has suffered. He did a good job of expressing that pain. Adoption can be quite complicated at times and it is devastating to find out your whole life is built on a lie.
But I am also a grownup and can’t help but feel angry at the parents, ALL of the parents involved. As angry as I am at bio mom I can’t help but wonder what situation, what pain would move her to send him away and respect her for her decision. Greed, yes but it’s not all about greed or she would not have had him to begin with. Dad (or step-dad) seems more in love with love than any person. And then there’s adoptive mom who lied to him all his life. It sounds like she loved him, like a little girl loves a puppy, not as an adult who needs to decide what’s best for him in the long run (cause honey, you’re not it). It makes sense now that she would see Bo Tong as his “password” seeing her lack of maturity. How selfish.

  13. Congratulations Keun Suk! You just nailed it! You touched my heart! I saw episode 14 twice, once on gooddrama and another time on dramafever. I don´t speak Korean so I always have to wait for the English subtitles.
Jang Keun Suk just proved that he is a world famous actor, not just an entertainer, model and wonderful singer. His acting on Episode 14 was not exaggerated nor full of clichés, he conveyed his message of being absolutely sad and deceived in a heartbreaking way.. he showed us how he was trying to pull himself together little by little. Hats off!
I was not really paying attention to the song at the end of the episode (won´t spoil it for the ones who haven´t seen it yet) until I realized it was absolutely important, after reading the translated lyrics. I just became another of Jang Keun Suk´s fans after seeing episode 14!
To find the translated lyrics of Jung Joon Young´s song – I’m Nobody:

    • With my eyes closed,
      I think of you
      I can’t hear anything
      The memories
      left in my heart
      I have never
      forgotten you even once

      The memories that
      fill up my heart
      The unknown feelings
      I have are wanting you

      Just for one day
      Just for one day today
Just be in my arms like this
Then I will wipe away your tears
      I love you
      I love you
I will always be by your side
      I will live for you

      The memories that
      fill up my heart
      The unknown feelings
      I have are wanting you

      Just for one day
      Just for one day today
Just be in my arms like this
Then I will wipe away your tears
      I love you
      I love you
I will always be by your side
      I will live for you

      I’m nobody
      I’m nobody
      I’m nobody..(without your love)
      I’m nobody..

It sums up all the realization of Ma Te’s feelings for Bo Tong. The lyrics are simple & yet give us the explanation of Ma Te’s unknown feelings. Yes with all the pains of betrayals & rejection (from his birth mother) this is exactly how anyone would feel a nobody but with Bo Tong’s undying love & loyalty, he knew then he has to live for her. My goodness this is really so touching. Thank You for sharing this, even without that much skinship between them this explains the hidden emotional chemistry between the two main characters. And I heard that Jung Joon Young who composed & provided the lyrics for this song has been following the drama & even read the manhwa to be able to convey the exact feeling of Ma Te. Also hats off to him.

  14. The first half of Bm and the second half are sort of different. I fancy the first half of it more but have to admit that the second half is modified to suit the local viewers’ taste more. Have been watching k drama for some time and have to say there is no way that the local people do not approve of it!!! The second half of it offers exactly what the locals are craving for!! The birth secret , the melodrama, the scandal, the tear shedding plot, excellent (and good looking actors and actresses ) cast and you name it. Am also informed that the lipstick which is advertised in this drama got no. one in sales!!! The results are loud and clear to me. The more i watch Bm the more i felt like the rating is distorted..at least as distorted as the awards!! Like my fellow eels sisters have rightly pointed out the awards mean nothing if the criteria for judging who are the winners are not so based on acting skills. Some of the results of the awards are just jaw dropping. They may be justified in the name of viewership. Ironically, the way they ascertain viewership is by no means fair and the justification they purportedly give is concerted and ill conceived.
