[Lesson #1 – What is Money?]
Episode 3 of Beautiful Man (Bel Ami) is the start of Mate’s growing up process, learning from ground zero from the millionaire property tycoon – Jaek Hee, whom he has known for a while.
I was wondering actually how Mate is going to learn what is money from this lady. With initial thought of her imparting property brokerage skills to him and growing money with the property asset… but how to do that in just 1 episode? The drama is scripted in a smart way that the most unexpected outcome at the end of the episode gives a surprising twist to reveal the learning process of Mate.
(My Thoughts): I feel Mate is learning not only directly from the woman of each conquest episode, but also through the 2 other women with him throughout., especially BoTong and his mentor, Hong Yoo Ra.
Mate has learnt that money is important but through the final decision of Jaek Hee of choosing money over him and yet she loves him more than her own life, he understands that money can control one’s mind and heart. He reflected also on his own action when he almost lost himself to money when he agreed to choose the easier path to get rich and comfortable life by accepting Jaek Hee’s marriage proposal, just after falling hard with failure of his first venture out to sell the 100,000 socks, which is the original mission given by Yoo Ra, is to help him to make money if he faces all the challenges by himself.
Not to mention that with Mate giving up all for easy road to wealth and money, he also wasted the hardship & effort put up by those who have supported him all the while unconditionally like BoTong.
I believe with the conclusion of this episode, Mate understands money is important but he needs to become the master to control money instead of the becoming the slave and being controlled by money.

Learning the cruel world outside dealing with money when Mate got cheated by crook on the shop rental fees and BoTong got hurt and lost the money she saved for Mate for years.

BoTong questioned Mate over the lunch treat by Mate after he told her he will be getting married to Jaek Hee. BoTong asked why he only talked about how rich Jaek Hee is but not on what he likes about the lady he will be marrying.
(Screen 1-3)
Jaek Hee told Mate the hard truth after the car accident that she loves money more than him despite she has shown her selfless love and even risked her life to protect him during the car accident.
(Screen 1-4)
The words which Mate conveyed to Yoo Ra what he learnt about money.
[First Impression]
This Episode is also the first meeting of Mate with David Choi (a low profile ordinary merchandiser at MG group home shopping division, the biggest home shopping company in the country).
Mate’s impression of David Choi from BoTong is he is the guy version of BoTong (in terms of personality) and David Choi’s impression of Mate through BoTong, is a pretty and busy oppa… and also a “bad” oppa as well as he feels each time that Mate has taken advantage of BoTong’s dedication and admiration for him.
(My Thoughts): Mate at this stage is still a pretty handsome man full of narcissism, full of ego and quite an insensitive guy towards BoTong and no wonder David Choi thinks he is a bad guy!
If I met someone like Mate in real life at this stage, I would feel the same like David too!!!

[Women surrounding Mate]
Surprising in this drama and up to episode 3, I love all the women surrounding & supporting Mate so far. Each has played the role well through in the first 3 episodes. They are surfacing also the other side of them like cuteness, insecurity and kindness and…each with their own story to tell
(My Thoughts): Why are these women so familiar to eels?
Because many of their action shown to Mate are reminding ourselves of our admiration for Suk in real life, just think about the things we do one way or another… LOL!
In fact, I find all the actresses cast in this drama so far really good and natural in acting their respective roles.
Those scenes which I love so much in this episodes are those sweet and cute moment of Mate with BoTong or Jaek Hee.
(Screen 3-1)
Mate was angry that BoTong didn’t pick up his call and became grumpy. Then he found the egg breakfast made by BoTonn…prepared with love.. on the dining table.
(Screen 3-2)
BoTong shouting out to Mate across the street innocently about the selling price of his luxury watches forgetting her oppa Mate is afraid to lose face especially in front of other ladies.
(Screen 3-3)
BoTong crying out loudly at home after knowing Mate was getting married. However, she still think Mate would look good in Tuxedo but not bow-tie suit for his wedding!!

Jaek Hee proposing to Mate at his apartment, surprising Matea with the heart light-up in the opposite building which she bought.

I guess Ma Te would always be reminded about his Mom when he sees any recipe with egg.
Good job on your recap sis. I liked how you pointed out that the way many of the women surrounding Mate act towards him is familiar to Eels, since it is the way most Eels feel toward Jang Keun Suk. And of course we Eels are also getting a secret chuckle out of the stylist’s judicious use of Leopard Print for most all of the women surrounding Dokgo Mate! I hope it remains “an inside joke” throughout the whole series!
what if the women who wore leopard print in this drama are all eels. i remember i read somewhere that some lucky eels would be appear in this drama.not sure tho..

I can see the relationship between Mate and Bo Tong is close enough for her to ask him a personal question about the woman he’s going to married and about love.
Thanks sis QQ for your sharing your person thoughts about this drama. This drama is getting intriguing in each episode. I love the chemistry Dokgo Matte has with each of the ladies associated with him, Bo Tong, Yura, Jackie, and Electric Fairy.
Many people said that they don’t like this drama because there is chemistry or romance between the leading couples. Oh.Oh….I have agreed that their is NO romantic chemistry between Matte and Botong YET. But to me, their chemistry at the stage of the DRAMAS is thru their acts of caring and love for each other…..true Botong does more and care more for Dokgo Matte.
But Dokgo Matte, with all of his cool, manipulated acts with all his females encounters…..he is obliviously obliviously being his REAL self with Botong. Dokgo Matte is not afraid showing Botong with not so Beautiful side, both physical and mental. I think Dokgo Matte loves Botong…but his HIGH ambition and desire to be RICH blind him from the true at this point. That’s why he sure is NOT happy seeing perfect Angel like David Choi comes into BoTong’s life. Oh.Oh….Matte, you need to come to your sense FAST or you will lose the one precious person in your life..!!!

Thanks for the recap. So is Bo Tong in the “little sister” zone here? I was actually a little disappointing with Jackie, I was hoping that there was more to her. Too bad he never got to see her work and do what she was passionate about, it would have given him a completely different answer to the question about money and also the question about if he loved her. Oh well, the wheels are in motion…..
This was not such relationship…Matae does not care for work…he is used to getting things on a golden plate…so only cares for the results..( see how he did not even wanted to touch the locks of tbe warehouse).Matae did not love her for she was just a provider…and Jacky loved him for the reason he made her feel good about herself…and was even prepared to marry him to make sure she keeps that feeling..feeling of having a fantastic priceless piece of something that makes one feel good and is the envy of others…They both had their own agendas…..but when Jacky was told by the fairy, who on her turn was manipulated to do, that she Jacky would loose the one thing that makes everthing possible for her…the money if she would proceed with the wedding..she choose for the money..for it was the one thing that enables her to keep such toys as Matea

I did nt notice but somebody elsewhere commented abt leopard print. Yu ra, jaek hee, & bo tong wore the print. let’s say the drama stylist learnt from Sukkie or all of them were coincidence.
To emphasize Matae is surrounded by ” animals” fighting over him..as he is their prey…lol
