Jang Keun Suk attended the press premiere for a new Coupang Play series titled Decoy and shared his thoughts on making his drama comeback after 5 years.

Decoy is a new crime thriller series that delves into the truths of unresolved crimes from the past. Jang Keun Suk plays a detective named Gu Do Han.

The actor said, “Since it’s my comeback project in a while, I thought a lot about what I could show in the show. Taking on the character of Gu Do Hwan, I wanted to make an acting transformation and break free from the image I have. So I grew a beard to portray an image of a tough man and tried to restrain emotions when delivering the performance.”

The upcoming series marks his first drama comeback five years after his 2018 SBS drama, Switch: Change the World.

“Five years, including the time in the military, just flew by. I didn’t know it would take this long for me to make a comeback. After taking a long break, I had a chance to read the script of Decoy, and I loved it. The five-year break gave me enough time to recharge my energy. As a person who had never taken a break, I fully enjoyed being off work, reading scripts and learning various things. But I did not want to cause harm to the cast and crew, so I discussed a lot with the director to get myself ready on set,” he shared.

Jang Keun Suk also revealed, “I thought trying too hard to break free from my old image could cause a backfire. So I put a lot of thought into making the transformation as natural as possible. Someone once told me, ‘I didn’t know you could pull off that role,’ when I starred in The Case of Itaewon Homicide. It was a cathartic experience, and I wanted to experience it again. I wanted to shed my old image and become a new self. That’s what I’ve been thinking over the five years and the conclusion I reached.”

Decoy will premiere on January 27th. The series is a six-part show, slated to release two episodes per week. Part 2 is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2023.
