[Music] English translation of the lyrics “渇いたKiss (kawaita kiss; Thirsty Kiss)”

Credit: UNIVERSAL MUSIC JAPAN
Lyrics: Mari Oda
English translation: tenshi_akuma, edited by Hazy from ECI

“Did you have a nightmare?”
I felt she was stroking my hair
I heard her gentle voice
I held her tightly in my arms as if it was nothing,
trying not to be noticed

I wish you would never come in my dream
and distract my tranquil mind

Thirsty Kiss
We needed each other with avidity
Any words were unnecessary for us
A sweet dream
We were drawn and shaken
Even after we parted,
it remained as a thorn to prick my heart deeply

Her straight eyes are looking for a lie that she doesn’t want to find
A lingering feel on my lips
I tried to erase and replace it

I hear my heartbeat louder than usual
I still feel your lasting memories

Thirsty Kiss
Your strong-willed eyes and shaken shoulders
I pretended like I didn’t notice and hurt you
A nightmare
Upon awakening, I wish you have someone to hold you in his arms Ah

I wonder if I can get along with you now
I don’t intend to
But I don’t know why I still remember you

Thirsty Kiss
We can’t turn the clock back
The memories will fade away before I know
A dream in summer
I try not to notice the warmth of arms after awakening
Unforgettable love Ah

  1. This one was more difficult to translate. Even it’s hard to appreciate the whole story. It seems it’s about his unforgettable love with his ex-girlfriend. He has a new girlfriend beside him, but one night he had a dream, and remembered his ex-girlfriend. In the lyrics, I think there are two girls appeared. One is his current girlfriend (I used SHE in the translation) and the other is his ex-girlfriend (I used YOU; オマエ). But the lyrics didn’t mention clearly to whom this phrases are meant. So I used my imagination and discussed with Hazy.

I will share some thoughts here why I chose the word for the translation.
    1) 唇に残ってる感覚を 上書きするよう消した
A remaining feeling on my lips
I tried to erase and replace it
–> In my understanding, he kissed his new girlfriend to erase the feel on his lips (he felt in his dream). He wanted to replace it with the real feel kissing his current girlfriend. Literally 上書き means ‘overwrite save’ on PC.
    2) 悪い夢 覚めたオマエを 抱きしめてる 見知らぬ誰かいたらいいさ
    A nightmare
Upon awakening, I wish you have someone to hold you in his arms
–> The previous part was also written about his ex-girlfriend, I suppose. In my understanding, he admitted he hurt his ex-girlfriend, and now their relationship is broken. So after he awoke from a dream, he hoped she’s now happy with someone.

P.S. I chose ‘Thirsty’ Kiss for the translation of 渇いたkiss, but I think 渇いた has another meaning, ‘Dry’. Dry sounds something happened past and not fresh. Maybe the writer tries to put both meanings.

  2. Thanks a lot sis. Reading the translation of the lyric I had the same impression as you and Hazy… his past love, probably the first unforgottable and passionate love, difficult to erase, but the one where you make mistakes… and the current love, probably a sweet one… but still hard to delete the previous one…

  3. It’s nice to visit again this blog. I missed a lot.Anyway, as I understand about the translation of the song, the guy is having a hard time to forget his past love which had left an unforgettable memories they’ve shared together but he doesn’t want to hurt his present love. Maybe some of us have experienced that kind of feeling on to someone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this song dear tenshi and hazy. It was really nice but a little bit sad.

  8. I’ve finally decided that I want to begin trying to actually understand what the lyrics of JKS’ songs are saying, in addition to simply enjoying the sound of his voice and the emotions he conveys through his singing. Tenshi and Hazy, boundless thanks for all of the years that you’ve done these translations for us! Your translations and interpretations are so unique and irreplacable – we’d literally be lost without you! <3
