[OSEN] In the movie ‘The Beauty Inside’, it’s a story about a man who becomes a different man everyday he wakes up – his face, age and gender would change. As an actor, isn’t this his profession? Of course, it won’t be like in the movie where his face will change every day but in every acting work, he will come across a very different role. Because of this, the best compliment for an actor is you can’t see his own face but only the one which he is playing.

Debuted as a child actor, Jang Keun Suk has accumulated a lot of acting experience since he was little. He has lived more than half of his life as an actor. From child roles to the weak, sickly pretty boy master, then to the unlucky Dae-Gil. Here, we have compiled the best roles that JKS has come across, this is ‘Jang Keun Suk Inside’.

‘Hwang Jin-I’: Kim Eun-Ho
The first love of Joseon’s incredible beauty Hwang Jin-I. In 2006’s KBS2 TV drama ‘Hwang Jin-I’, actor Jang Keun Suk played Master Eun-Ho. Within a short time, he has shaken the hearts of the females in front of the TV. Eun-Ho played an innocent young master who became sick yearning for the beautiful Hwang Jin-I (played by Ha Ji-Won) whom he fell in love with at first sight and whom he could not forget. Although his child actor image was very strong before that, after Hwang Jin-I, JKS became the first love for the young girls of the Republic of Korea and successfully transformed as a brilliant adult actor.

After that, the notable role was as Lee Chang-Hwi in the KBS2 TV drama ‘Hong Gil-Dong’ in 2008. Although the background was Joseon historical drama which was similar to Hwang Jin-I but it was a totally different story. The role that JKS played – Lee Chang –Hwi was the son heir of the previous king. It was with difficulties that he survived but he could only live as someone who shouldn’t have been alive. Because he was a tragic prince, JKS had to make it a very sad atmosphere all the time in order to show Chang-Hwi’s intention for revenge. In the drama, he was like someone who walked out from a Manhwa with his dashing looks.

‘You’re Beautiful’: Hwang Tae-Kyung
The SBS TV drama ‘You’re Beautiful’ in 2009 created heatwaves both in and out of the entertainment industry and Hwang Tae-Kyung was one of the roles of his life. As the centre of the most popular band ‘A.N.Jell’, Hwang Tae-Kyung successfully played a classic ‘cold-blooded & proud’ which is currently popular. He understood very well he was full of himself, but he also had a gentle side. The interesting and most notable part in the drama was when he fell in love with Go Min-Nam, he became a cute Hwang Tae-Kyung. JKS successfully played this role which spoke in a unique tone of voice, and received a lot of attention.

‘Jackpot/Royal Gambler’: Baek Dae-Gil
After two years’ absence, JKS returned to the TV screen in the SBS drama ‘Royal Gambler’ in March. He played Baek Dae-gil who inherited royal blood but wasn’t allowed to live. He had a difficult life and ended up as a prince who was the son of a gambler. For this drama, JKS acted in scenes of being buried in mud flats, fell over the cliff, chewed a live snake etc, his acting spirit was burning. He threw away the image of ‘handsome face’ through acting in various scenes of sufferings, perfectly shaken off the fixed image he had before, receiving a lot of good reviews. Continuously changing JKS, what kind of image will he bring us next? [END]

  2. Thank you so much for translating and sharing the 3 articles.

“The Royal Gambler” [TRG] has indeed put JKS in a new light for K-netz who are of the opinion that he really shines as an actor in this drama. Personally, I’m so glad he picked TRG as his comeback drama after a long acting hiatus. Previously, he had often been regarded as merely a ‘pretty-flower boy’ who acted in romcoms. But, his challenging role as Baek Dae-gil, and great acting skills succeeded in getting rid of that image and prejudice once and for all.. thank God for that!

To answer the last question ‘What kind of image will he bring us next?’, I hope to see him appear in a suspense thriller as a detective on a deadly mission to solve a mysterious murder case, with lots of unexpected plot twists and turns. I know he has just finished filming TRG, and is still tired and worn out, but it would be great if he could do one last drama before his military service…
