[OSEN=Ra Hyo Jin] Historical drama of 24 episodes. Drama break of 2 years. Outstanding juniors and seniors actors. There were several obstacles in front of Jang Keun Suk, the actor who played the main role at ‘Jackpot’. However, the actor who has been 20 years since debuted was different somehow. He overcame all those obstacles through his acting skills and charisma and led the drama great for 3 months.

Jang Keun Suk’s activity until the last episode of SBS ‘Jackpot’ aired on June 14 was outstanding. To his brother Youngjo (a role played by Yeo Jin-goo) who is vigilant because of complex that he was born from lowest class of people family and anxious about the throne obtained with difficulty, Baek Dae-gil tried hard to earn trust. Baek Dae-gil’s pathetic eyes were sorrowful because it was Jang Keun Suk.

Jang Keun Suk acted for variety of characters that we can say it was three characters for one person such as Young-soo who was abandoned after born because he was born in 6 months after pregnant although he was a son of King Sukjong (a role played by Choi Min-soo), a son of gambler Baek Man-geum (a role played by Lee Moon-sik), Gae-ddong and Baek Dae-gil who became an adult by alone. The development of young man who challenge with spirit by believing his ‘luck’ only in the beginning to become a leader who truly cares about public was great enough to touch the viewers.

The ways of treating two fathers, Sukjong and Baek Man-geum were totally different. He was close to Baek Man-geum as if they are friends forever. His affection to only one family, Baek Man-geum was extraordinary. However, he sent missing eyes towards Sukjong while he was in front of him. He supposed to blame Sukjong who kept silence about throwing him away although he knew that he exists, but there was no anger in his eyes while looking at his real father.

There were sparks fly up when he opposed enemy Lee In-jwa (a role played by Jun Kwang-ryul). He just thought Lee In-jwa as an enemy who killed his father, but was waiting for revenge to bring nation’s peace. Along with Baek Dae-gil’s development, the purpose of punishing Lee In-jwa has changed from revenge to great cause. One of the things that made this flow natural is Jang Keun Suk’s acting skill that was not bad compared to King of historical drama Jun Kwang-ryul. At the time when two people stared each other, it was feeling chill as if two tigers in different age facing each other.

‘Bromance’ with Youngjo who is real brother and became the King was something attracted attention from ‘Jackpot’. As friends sometimes, as brothers sometimes and as King and a retainer sometimes, although their position changed instantly, the thing made viewers not confused is two people’s harmony. In addition, among those great actors, Jang Keun Suk’s control of acting strength was the power of drama ‘Jackpot’. The reason to expect actor Jang Keun Suk’s next, Jang Keun Suk proved this again through ‘Jackpot’. /bestsurplus@osen.co.kr

  1. I haven’t watched yet the last 2 episodes but all I can is, JKS has portrayed his role perfectly. No other actor can give justice to the role of Dae-gil except him, and only him. You can feel and see different emotions through his eyes. Hope he’ll get a best actor award. Looking forward for more challenging and award-winning roles/projects for him. Soar high, my prince! Tremendous success is coming your way. Love you so much! God bless you.

  4. Kudos to JKS for creating a such complex and completely believable character. He was masterful in selecting a script that gave him so much opportunity to show his maturity as an actor by portraying the myriad of changes needed to show us the ‘growing-up’ of Daegil. It still is difficult for me to think of Daegil as a fictitious character – he’s very, very alive to me.
